MAGIC JOHNSON: ‘HIV HAS BROUGHT MY WHOLE FAMILY CLOSER’

Twenty-one years after announcing his battle with HIV, Magic Johnson’s family is stronger than ever. “I think it’s brought my whole family closer together. [They are] in the same fight, the same battle in terms of HIV,” said Johnson during a press conference for the first at-home HIV test kit named ‘OraQuick.’

Johnson spoke on his success with managing the virus, citing family and medicine as his main sources of help. “Many people are surprised to find that for 21 years the cocktail I’ve been taking [is] the same three drugs, once a day. The thing that’s made Magic magical is that I’ve taken my meds! [But] nobody can beat this disease by himself. You need a support system that you can open up to,” said Magic.

Johnson announced that he was HIV positive in 1991 during a press conference. He and his wife Earlitha have two children together. Magic has three children in all.
