Although she couldn’t remember a specific time in history when she stopped everything to meditate on the fact that her mom was the first African American to be crown ‘Miss America,’ Melanie told ‘CBS This Morning’ that her friends’ reaction to her mom’s stardom was an eye-opener. “I didn’t have a specific moment but I feel like kids in school would always reiterate and, you know, make it that she was who she was,” said the young adult.

Jillian also commented on her realization of Vanessa’s stardom saying, “I would say when we traveled, the reaction to her. In school, definitely friends knew and stuff like that, but definitely when we traveled.”

Melanie was Vanessa’s inspiration for doing ‘Ugly Betty,’ as she advised her mom to take on the role that later led to much publicity. The young adult told CBS that such advice came from the mutual respect that she and her mom have developed for one another over the years. “I think there’s a switch that happens between your adolescence and your adulthood when you realize that your mom is just really looking out for you, and really has your best interest at heart,” explained Melanie. “I felt like at that point we [had built a relationship to where] I could give her advice and know that she took my opinion at heart. So I was happy to advise that.”

Vanessa makes it a point to be friends with all of her children so that they can feel comfortable enough to talk with her about anything. The celeb has four kids in all.
