Amandla Stenberg is well-known as an actress, advocate, and model. However, did you know that she was a comic book writer too? Well, she is! And her comic, Niobe: She is Life, is back for its fourth issue.
Niobe: She is Life, written by Stenberg and Sebastian A. Jones, chronicles the tale of Niobe Ayutami, an orphaned wild elf teenager and also savior of her world-Asunda. Niobe is running from her past, with the weight of prophecy on her shoulders, navigating through this coming of age story involving love, betrayal, and sacrifice.
Last year, Stenberg spoke to Solange Knowles for Teen Vogue about her then new comic book, saying that “growing up, I was always super into fantasy and The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones and all of that, but I could never find black characters whom I really liked. [Niobe is] finding her faith and finding her identity. And she’s going to keep growing until she becomes this warrior destined to unite the human world and the elf world.”
Niobe: She is Life, is the first comic book to be written by, illustrated by, and starring a black girl as the main character.
